Santorini is noted for its hillside homes built on the steep cliffs. The cliff on the island of Santorini were formed by the explosion of the volcano Thera in 1600 B.C.
Cruise ships now anchor in the center of the old volcano. Passengers from the cruise ship arrive at a dock at the base of the island.
From the dock passengers have a choice of cable car, donkey ride or walking to reach the top.
We selected cable car.
A view of our cruise ship from the top.
There are many donkeys on the island and some signs related to donkeys.
We took a van tour of the island. Our first stop was the beach town of Kamari.
Even though it was a warm sunny day, this is the off season for tourists and the black sand beach was empty.
Our next stop was a hillside winery at Athinios with a great view of the island and our cruise ship.
Hill top homes.
From Athinios we traveled through Fira where the locals had Christmas decorations out.
A local market in Fira.
Our last stop, the beautiful town of Oia on the north end of the island.
